Happy Gotcha Day, Scooby Doo!

It's been one year since Scooby's other mother
signed over her parental rights to us for Scooby Doo .
So does this mean I can stay?
If ma doesn't quit finding his pee spots all over the house
she said she is going to sell him to the gypsy's.

But I am too cute for gypsies!
Until we can find some gypsy's
that will actually take him

He has to wear the belly band.

I am the lead howler in a group called "Belly Band"

Happy Gotcha day Scooby Doo

What To Do If You Need Help Feeding Your Pet.

The calls have started. Heating bills go up when the temperatures go down. The holiday season is here and some people are having a hard time trying to maintain the household budget.

Did you know this is the time of year that many pets get surrendered to shelters? I know you probably think this is the time when adoptions are up because of people wanting to give pets for Christmas, but with each adoption that happens there are 2 pets surrendered. Why would someone want to surrender their pets during the holiday season? What does high heating bills have to do with pets being surrendered? Money. The reason we hear the most is "I can't afford to feed them."

Some people have a hard time feeding themselves and their family much less their pets. It's hard to make ends meet. Have you ever had a bad month? The car breaks down, the water heater goes out or maybe you were sick and missed some days from work that were non paid. I have had friends who have had the unexpected expenses happen who were already strapped for cash. We have helped them by buying them pet food and supplies to get them through a month. Its one less thing they have to worry about.

There are over 50 million people on food stamps right now. Over 7 million pets are surrendered to shelters each year due to the fact owners can't afford to feed them.

The one thing that shelters want is for pets to stay in the home.

There may be help for those who are having a hard month. Here are some things that can maybe help you get through a tough time.

1. Ask your local shelter - Shelters may be able to help you feed your pets. They can provide a month of food and supplies such as kitty litter to help. It depends on how much they have donated to them.
Sometimes shelters may have helped many people before you so they may not have the extra food or litter to give but they may only be able to help with a week or two of food.

2. Ask your local Humane Society - If your shelter is unable to help then maybe your local humane society can. I will say again that it depends on how much has been donated to them whether they can help you for a week or a month.

3. Ask friends or family - Don't be afraid to ask for assistance from friends or family. They are more likely to help you since they know you wouldn't be asking if you didn't need it.

If you are having a hard time feeding your pets and you need to ask for assistance, there are some things you should be prepared to show. It will help you be processed faster.

1. a letter from a food stamp office stating what you are receiving
2. a current payroll check stub or unemployment statement
3. utility bills

Some places don't ask for verifications of these items mentioned above but its always best to have them to show the need is real. Unfortunately, there are those out there who want a handout but don't really need the help. I know you think that is harsh but its true. We have encountered them.

Please do not expect more than a month of help feeding your pets. Shelters, rescues and friends are limited on how much they can help.

Ways you can help?

Helping people feed their pets in hard times can be hard on shelters and rescues who have limited supplies of pet food and litter.

Donate to your local shelters and rescues -The more food and litter donated the more they can help. Shelters know about how much food and litter is needed for the animals in their care. It varies month to month but if they have a extra bag of food or litter , it could be just what is needed to get a person through a tough month.

Don't assume your donation will go to help someone - When donating request your donation to go to those who are in need. The shelter will set it aside for a couple weeks to see if anyone calls asking for assistance. Sometimes the shelter will have the need to use it for the animals in their care.

I can honestly say that I have been at my humane society when people came by and donated items. Some of the items would be stairs for pets, bags of litter or food and they have said "maybe you know someone who can use it". They know there is a need from others. I have heard ma on the phone with someone asking for help during a rough time or heard her speaking to someone who are needing to surrender their pet due to not being about to feed it. She has asked them if maybe a few weeks of food or other supplies would help to keep the pet in the home and some say yes and some say no. Those who said yes are the ones who we want to help. Why shouldn't we? If it will help keep the pet in the home that loves them then we should at least try.

I received help to get me through now what? If you received help and are able, GIVE BACK. You made it through your tough times and now you have a couple extra dollars. You see a sale on cat food for 3 cans for $1.00 or a bag of kitty litter marked down to $3.00 because it has a small tear in it. If you are able, buy it and donate it back to the shelter or Humane Society who helped you. It may not seem much to you but to another person, it could be the difference in keeping a animal in the home or surrendering it to a shelter.

If you can't afford to buy anything , donate your time. A couple hours of volunteering at a shelter to play with the animals is always welcoming to shelter staff and the animals. Take a shelter dog for a walk or brush the kitties, it shows you appreciate the help and you give back with your time.

There are also other programs who may be able to help you or help you through a longer period.  Visit the links below to see if you qualify for any help through them.

Do you donate to shelters?
Would you be upset if you found out your donation went to someone in need?
I would love your thoughts on this.

May you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and it be filled with good food, good times and memories that will leave you with a smile.

WW-Goodbye Miss Piggy

In Oct 2012 , a photo was posted on Facebook of a guinea pig that had been surrendered to our Humane Society. This was a girl piggy who had been a child's pet for 4 yrs and the child had lost interest in her and the mom was tired of taking care of her.
The piggy was scared to death and since our office also houses cats, it didn't make the situation any better. Ma asked dad if she could foster the pig to get her out of the office and help her calm down. He agreed since he didn't think it was a good situation for her neither.
What started out as a foster pig , quickly made my pawents a foster failure.
Miss Piggy stole their hearts.
She hadn't been properly cared for. She was fed low quality food, her nails were curled under from growing so long and she wanted to spend all her time in the house in the cage. This was a sign that she hadn't ever been messed with or socialized often.
That all changed. Piggy was brought out of the cage , she got floor time to run around to exercise and she got held ,alot. She adjusted and looked forward to floor time and cuddling.

She would lay in the bed with ma and watch tv with us, she would chase us around and she learned to communicate with squee's and wheeks.
She became part of our family.

Watching TV with ma
She enjoyed going outside and "mowing" the grass in the summer, stretching out in the dirt and playing on the patio. Her nails were slowly clipped a little shorter each time till the curls were gone and she was able to walk with ease.

She loved playing in leaf piles and playing peek a boo. She even liked wearing hats. Ma said she had the sweetest face and we all agree. She learned to give kisses and watching her walk across the floor was sure to bring a smile to your face.

She acted as if she enjoyed her life. She ate better quality of foods and loved to be handfed. She got to experience things that was new and if she got scared she would run to ma.

A few months ago another guinea pig was surrendered to the Humane Society. Ma said no more guinea pigs, one was enough. She sent a text to the staff member at the Humane Society saying find another foster and the text back was "ok, we found one". When we got home from the kitty sitting job, there was a second Guinea pig. We named Cinnamon. Dad had seen the photo on Facebook and went straight to the Humane Society to pick him up. He was the "Found Foster". He said Miss Piggy at first didn't like the new guinea pig but he was only a few months old and very tiny, she finally started cleaning him and making sounds that we have never heard before. She was purring. She had a best friend.
When Cinnamon reached maturity they had to be separated but the cages sat side by side. They were happy with that. They enjoyed "mowing' the grass together, chasing each other around, taking naps in the sunshine and talking to each other.

Piggy's coat got shiny and so did her eyes. She was active and healthy.
Ma and I have been at our kitty sitting job all week, we came home on Sunday to get Sarah , Scooby and Jenny  since dad had to go out of town for his job and the piggies were happy to see ma. They Wheeked and Squeed . She fed them, gave them kisses and we left.
Tuesday we came home around 4 PM and there was no Wheek or squee. She went to the back room where they were and said "can I get a wheek wheek?" No sound was heard. She checked on Cinnamon and he seemed ok but something was wrong. She called Piggy and she didn't come out of her house so ma reached in to wake her up. She looked like she was sleeping. She was cold and had started to stiffen up. Ma threw the house off of her and picked her up but it was useless because she must of died a few hours before.  Dad said he fed them hay around 11 AM and she was fine. So sometime between 11-4 she passed away. Of what, we don't know.
But she was laying on her side so ma thinks she passed in her sleep.

She was buried in the backyard that she loved so much and in her pink blanket that she loved to cuddle in.

Piggy was the first piggy the pawents ever had.  She stole their heart and mine.We loved her so much. Ma says she wish she would have been here sooner but the ifs, buts and why's aren't going to change things.
Cinnamon has sadness, we think he knows. But after cuddling and kisses, he ate his carrot out of ma's hand and enjoyed the time together. We know he is going to miss her. We are.

We love you Piggy.
You have brought us much joy.
You were the perfect piggy.
I am Thankful you came into our lives

Please don't listen to the commercials about Guinea Pigs being the perfect child's pet. They take a lot of care, their cages need to be cleaned often  and you the parent will be the one who ends up taking care of the Guinea Pig. They need exercise and their nails need clipping. It hurts my heart to see how small some guinea pig cages on the market are. The cage Miss Piggy came in was tiny. She was able to take a few steps to her food bowls and turn around and go back in her house. They need more room than this!

Safe Jerky Treats Is As Easy As #NudgesMoments

I have been on a quest for chicken jerky that taste just like chicken, but ma says it has to be from a US company that doesn't import it's chicken. I was starting to think it didn't exist. I seen where Nudges was seeking bloggers to try their jerky and tell them what they thought. I figured, why not? What did I have to lose? If I didn't like them I would take them to my fur friends at the humane society since they like other treats that I don't.
 Honestly,I am one picky poodle.

  • Nudges® Premium Jerky Cuts™ Treats are chicken jerky treats made in Independence, IA, with quality, safety and pride, where every batch is tested to ensure they are safe.

Zuke's #FuelTheLove Review and Giveaway

We have been on the hunt for good treats. Treats that are made in the US with high quality ingredients that aren't full of fillers and where the ingredients aren't imported from China. I have many friends who are always talking about Zuke's treats and how much they love them but honestly I have never been a fan...until now. Someone had donated a bag of Zuke's treats to our humane society and since they were ZFilets , ma was able to break them into small pieces to reward a few of our dogs when she gave them a command of sit. Everytime she said it, I would sit too. She gave me some and I really liked it. She had told me she would buy me some next time we were at the pet store.

So when  I heard about the Zuke's #Fuelthelove #BarkFriday blog hop, my ears perked up. I found out that Zuke's wanted bloggers to try out their products and help spread the word about the #FueltheLove Twitter party happening on November 29th from 11-12:30 CST where there will be plenty of prizes and great amount of fun. I jumped to the chance to help spread the word but then I found out that Zuke's was sending out packages of their treats for the bloggers to try, I think I heard angels singing. I could get myself my own Zuke's treats! Of course, I would share with Jenny and Scooby but I could try flavors that I have never tried. Then it was time to pick which ones I wanted to try. Boy was that hard! I finally narrowed it down and submitted my list and then I waited, and waited and waited some more. It only took a few days but to a dog, it took a long time.
When they arrived, ma took the box and put it up HIGH!  I could not believe she would do that. She said we had to wait. Its not easy doing this thing called wait. She finally took the box down and opened it and she had our undivided attention.

I can't wait to try them all!

I am happy as can be. Look what Zuke's sent me!
Wish I could just tear them all open and gobble them up.
We started with the ZFilets to try first.I know I liked the grilled beef but I haven't tried the other flavors. I also received Grill Venison and Grilled Chicken. We tasted them and ma expected us to spit them out but we just asked for more. I did all my commands such as sit, stay, down and high paw to get bits of these tasty treats. These treats are seasoned with Rosemary, Turmeric and Sage and they are GRAIN-FREE!! If you have dogs who are sensitive to grains, they can enjoy these treats! Like I said they can be broken into small pieces so they are great for training or a quick treat. The pieces are large so one treat can go a long way.

    Features & Benefits
  • All meat comes from US or New Zealand: safe, trustworthy sources
  • Meat is 80% of treat: ideal for dogs on limited-ingredient or grain-free diets
  • Nutrient-rich rosemary, sage and turmeric: powerful sources of antioxidants
  • Large treats easily tear into smaller pieces: perfect for any breed

I also received Skinny Bakes. These are crunchy mini treats that are only 10 calorie per treat. I got the Cherry N Berry, Pumpkin and Sweet Potato and Banana and Peanut Butter flavors. These are wheat, corn and soy free. They smell delicious. Ma was even tempted to eat one but she didn't , even though I double dog dared her. We all loved the pumpkin and sweet potato! We haven't opened the other ones yet but if they are as good as the ones we tried then we will be giving high paw reviews.
    Features & Benefits
  • Under 10 Calories: perfect for pups with a little extra around the middle, or for training without adding to the waistline
  • Healthy Vegan: Meat-free, clean ingredients mean nutritious, junk-free treats for your dog
  • Yummy Crunchy: big taste in a petite crunchy treat. Smell them...they taste even better!
  • Wheat-, Corn- and Soy-Free: clean ingredients mean even dogs with some common allergies can indulge

When ma and I visited the Zukes website  to find out mre about them, we found we actually enjoyed reading about the company. From where the idea came from to how they try do their part to help the earth. Things like using 60% recycled boxes , paying employees to ride bikes or scooters instead of driving cars and volunteering to help with roadside cleanups to keep their city trash free. To me that says a lot about a company.

It's short but after 2 long years ma finally caught me singing.
She is walking around as proud as a peacock
thinking she really accomplished something. BOL!
I rarely sing. I have only done it 3 times this year and
we have daily sirens telling us its noon.
The high pitch singer in the background is Scooby.
He can sing a tune all the way through.

B/W -PoodleBall Time!

Dog running in leaves

No More Plexidor

Back in July I was one of the Blogpaws bloggers selected to receive a Plexidor dog door. I was so excited! I would finally be able to go in and out as I needed to and so would my fur siblings. No more bothering ma to open the door.

We called about every installer in town only to find that most did not return our call or they did not install dog doors. I don't know if they thought it wasn't worth the money or the time or they just didn't know what they were doing. It was very disheartening. We did find one installer who said he never installed a door before but he would try; only problem was he was highly allergic to pets. The 30 minutes he was here resulted in ma giving him a allergy pill and his face swelling up!!
Ma was not too comfortable with allowing him to do the work. I agreed because seeing a man's face swell up in front of me was doggone scary! I couldn't take my eyes off him. I couldn't stop staring and Scooby started growling at him. Now, please know we are very well behaved but when a persons face starts swelling up in front of you , its freaky!
Blogpaws contacted ma and she told them she needed to send the door back. We were so sad. BlogPaws sent the return label to put on the door to ship it back and ma said we could call the brown truck people to pick it up

but since we needed to do errands , we decided to take it to a drop off center.

Dog laying next to box
But I don't want to send it back!

The door is on it's way back to Plexidor. Yes I am sad but I am grateful that I was chosen to be one of the BlogPaws bloggers who would get to enjoy the door. I do want to thank Plexidor for their patience with us while we attempted to get a installer and working with us to help find someone. But it just wasn't meant to be......I will add that if you are searching for a new dog door, please check out Plexidor dog doors. These are top quality, extra secure and very well made doors. They are well worth the price and effort!

*I was compensated for my original post from the Plexidor company. I decided to post this to let my viewers know the status of my door and that even though I did not get my door installed I would still recommend the product.
