Dear People of Every City

Dear People of Every City in America,
We have waited through the long cold winter longing for the warm weather. We were excited to see our summer get here so we no longer had to stay cooped up in the house, we could spend our afternoons and nights outside. We could spend time in the outside enjoying the smells of the honeysuckle, listening to the sounds of the waterfall of the pond, and hearing the crickets serenade us. We could spend quality family time together. We could swim in our pool and the pawents could relax on their floats. We made it less than a month of warm weather and you ruined it.
You ruined it by deciding to shoot off those big booms also known as fireworks. It started weeks ago. It started the first of June. The fireworks are for July not June. I don't mind fireworks. I am not afraid of the noise, but my brother Scooby is and so are many more. You put a fear in animals that you wouldn't want in your child but you don't care. You enjoy your big booms and your pretty lights. You remember all the oohs and aahs. But remember you are frightening animals whose parents try their best to wear out during the day, possibly give doses of Benadryl or a prescription prescribed by their vets. You scare the animals who may be waiting for their pawents to come home from work and they hear the sounds through the walls, you scare the ones who are outside. You ruin our summer nights.
Instead of spending a relaxing evening outside, we spend it in the house with the tv or radio on loud so Scooby doesn't hear the booms, we spend it with him in Ma's lap shaking. You have put a fear in him and others to where they are afraid to go outside at all. They shake and tremble just at the thought of having to go out and potty.
How would you like your child to be that afraid of something? Would you like to see them sit and shake? Would you like to hear them cry? No you wouldn't. That is what you do to the animals. Can you not give us some of our summer? Can we not enjoy our evenings in peace? Is that too much to ask?
I don't think so. Please save your fireworks till July 4th. We know we won't have the month of July to enjoy summer because you will be continuing to use up what you have left over from your celebration.
Please let us have a few summer nights to make memories with our families without the fear of the sounds.
  Signed,
the Pets of America.

    1. Thank you Caren. Its sad to see how terrified that Scooby gets and to read how my friends fur kids are too. It's sad we can't enjoy our summers with the family. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate it.

  2. Amen to this! We live in the country and have to put up with it as well, from our neighbors! Cricket hates them the most. We go to bed early so invariably we are already in bed when they start setting them off, otherwise we would stay downstairs with the TV and A/C on to at least try to drown them out some. I myself don't care for being woken by a loud boom....and then to have to try to comfort Cricket. We do have an anxiety wrap to try on her this year, but I'll be surprised if it really helps much. It wouldn't be so bad if they would limit it to the 4th of July when we'd be expecting it, but they set them off on random days, so we never know when it might happen. It does kind of ruin what would otherwise be a great time of year to enjoy.

    1. Its those random days that are so aggravating. Like you said we expect it on July 4th but to start them the beginning of June and not end till sometime in August makes our summers miserable. Seems like there are fireworks stands on every corner which makes it worse.
Thank you for stopping by. I really appreciate you.

  3. We have Canada Day here on Tuesday and I feel for all of the pets out there that get scared of the pops and booms. A friend lost her dog a few years ago when he bolted from the yard. Never found him. Please keep your pets inside, I say.

  4. Great letter! Luckily, Maya and Pierson aren't too concerned about the fireworks, but I hear other dogs in the neighborhood that are barking mad at them.

  5. I've got neighbors who are enamored with fireworks now that they are legal in ME. I'm so very glad they don't frighten my cats or I would be even more annoyed with them than I am now

  6. Around here they start about a month before the 4th and end a month after. Thanks to the seriously rainy summer, we have barely had any nights with fireworks thus far. Don't see the fun in loud pops all the time, and it is dangerous. My sister Katie is scared, Bailie and I aren't, but still it is annoying to everyone.
