*On October 1, 2014 I gave up my position as spokesdog. I will continue to support the Owensboro Humane Society. I will continue to write about the pets who need homes and the issues shelters face.
You can read about our decision to leave in my previous post- My Job As A Spokesdog Is No More

Most of my readers know that I volunteer with a No Kill shelter in Owensboro , Ky. When we tell people that we are a no kill ,we usually get the response of "oh good, those pets don't have to worry about being killed" . We also get the comment of how the person would rather go to a kill shelter and save a life since our pets aren't going anywhere. With that in mind, you have to remember that all those pets that have been passed up have spent year after year just waiting for the perfect home to come their way. Year after year growing older, year after year not knowing the comforts of a home.

We always hear and read people saying they want all shelters to be a  No Kill. Honestly, I don't see that ever coming true. Its not that I don't have the faith that it could happen , its the fact that there are so many that need to be educated about pets. There will always be backyard breeders, people who accept a pet but doesn't want to put the time or the effort into training or sees pets as disposable.

Being a No kill shelter, you have to understand that
No-kill shelters take in a limited number of animals and allow these animals to live out their natural lives in the shelter if they are not adopted.
Can you imagine living a entire life in a shelter? How many shelters could afford to do this?

How many times have you been on a website or Facebook page of a kill shelter and read where people have stated that no kill shelters don't care about this dog or cat? It's not that no kills don't care, its because there is only so many kennels, so many spots that can be taken and if none of the pets at that said shelter doesn't get adopted then that spot can't be filled. How many no kill shelters could handle taking in every animal that was surrendered. Another myth that I hear is that no kill shelters only take in healthy, adoptable animals. This is not always true. There are many that will take in a sick animal and give it the care that it is needed to get it well to only adopt them to wonderful homes.  Running a no kill is not a easy task. Most are ran with 1 or 2 paid staff members and the rest is volunteers. A no kill shelter can be more pickier than other shelters but if you ask any no kill shelter they will tell you they have a handful of animals that they know are "lifers". But you can also ask them about that animal and they will tell you they are in the best place they can be.

The shelter I volunteered with was the Owensboro Humane Society. They are a no kill, non profit small facility in Owensboro, Ky. We do not get money from the city, county or state to help run our facility. Our money comes from donations from the public and our services such as spay/neuter clinics money comes from grants so that we can offer a low cost clinic to help with the cost of the surgery. Other services are offered such as low cost dog training, Free nail clipping clinics and low cost micro chipping clinics. We also have programs that we ask people to participate in like Sponsor a pet, you pick the pet and send in a monthly donation and that money goes strictly to that pet. If that pet gets adopted then the items that were bought for that pet whether it be a toy or a bed goes with the pet. It also could go to the medical cost of the pet or even helping with the monthly flea treatments. Every little bit helps to enhance the life of that animal.

This page is dedicated to my fur friends who live at
the Owensboro Humane Society and are seeking a home of their own.
The Owensboro Humane Society is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Started in 1968, the @Owensboro Humane Society (KENTUCKY) is the only no-kill facility in the area. It operates on the belief that all of mankind has a responsibility to respect the creatures on this earth. To that end, we strive to improve the life, health, and habitat for rejected, abused, and neglected animals in our Owensboro area.

With a very small staff and a small army of dedicated volunteers, OHS places priority on spay & neuter services to try & stop the cycle of unwanted pets ending up in the kill shelters. Understanding that volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization, OHS operates an "intense" training program for all ages. Even children under the age of 18 have a role to play in the work of OHS and, with appropriate training, they step up beautifully! Families are encouraged to volunteer as are community groups.

  1. I agree with everything you said about being a no-kill Carma! People think!!! We get these animals in that other shelters would of killed because of their health or attitude problems. Guess what? We make them healthy again which usually treats their behavior. If you adopt from us(the animals that would of been put down) we can take in more to help and rehab and give them that chance. THINK!!!
