If you have Arachnophobia this post isn't for you. If you would like to learn about the benefits of spiders, please continue. I know everyone doesn't like spiders but I find them extremely beneficial to our yard.
Spiders help to keep bad bugs away from your plants and your yard. Got problems with grasshoppers or those pesky cave crickets like we do? Spiders will help thin out the nests. Mosquitoes will also start disappearing if you have a beneficial spider.
The black and yellow garden spider is not poisonous to people or pets. I would rather have these spiders in my yard than any other. They weave a zig-zag silk web. Some call them zipper spiders due to their webs. Fun Fact: This spider is known as a writing spider just like the one in Charlotte's Web.
Garden spiders eat a variety of bugs.They catch a wide range of flying prey including flies, moths, beetles, wasps, mosquitoes, etc in their webs. These spiders actually have poor vision. They wait till they feel their webs vibrate to know they have caught something.
There are over 30,000 varieties of spiders. In the United States, the most poisonous spiders are the brown recluse and black widow. We have a black widow in a jar on our mantel. I am debating whether to let her loose or keeping her over the winter.
There are a few people who don't understand why I don't kill the spiders I see. It is because they are helpful in my yard as earthworms. They keep bad bugs who would normally eat my plants or make a meal out of me away,
Plus I enjoy seeing how they weave their webs. Some have straight webs, circular webs, perfectly formed webs. and the messy webs. There is a garden spider who has spun a web over my pond. The web has caught most of the leaves and the seeds from the plumes of the pampas grass. This has prevented it from going in my pond.

ReplyDeleteI have walked into many a spider's web - in broad daylight! Apparently my eyesight isn't so hot either. I think my garden spider's are slackers because the mosquitos have apparently erected a high capacity housing project somewhere in our yard! I don't kill the spiders as long as they keep their distance from me - for mosquitos however, I have a zero tolerance policy.
