8 Etiquette Tips For a Successful Blogpaws Conference With Dogs

For those who are attending the Blogpaws conference for the first time or those who are going for their second time etc, who are bringing your dog/s.

In past conferences, these have been some of the main complaints
I have heard from others and something's that I even experienced.

Here are some friendly reminders for doggie etiquette:

1) Flexi-leash - keep it locked at a safe distance while in the hotel especially the exhibit room or session

Poodles meeting
Last year ma and others almost tripped over a Flexi-leashes due to the dog being across the aisle from the owner. Many other people were complaining about the Flexi-leashes as well. If your leash is 10ft, when inside the dog shouldn't be 10ft away from you. 4 foot is far enough away from you when inside
2) Please do not let your dog rush up to another dog to say hi.
Some dogs really do not like a strange dog rushing up to its face or bottom and it is stressful enough for some dogs to be there.
3) Don't let your dog continue to smell another dog's ears or bottom
We know dogs like to sniff other dogs butt but if your dog is trying to get their nose up another dog and the other dog is trying to get away from your dog, please pull your dog back.
4) Don't stand in the middle of the aisle in the exhibit room
When you are in the room with the brands it will be very crowded. Standing in the middle of the aisle talking while others are trying to get passed you is rude. Please move out of the middle of the aisle so others can get past you.
5) What do you do when you are in a session and your dog starts barking
Don't proclaim they are doing what dogs do or ignore your dog. Your dog is making it hard for others to hear what the speaker is saying and it is being rude to the speaker.
6) Some dogs don't like big, small , black or white type dogs
There are some dogs that don't like certain type dogs and it is nothing against your dog. Example, there is one dog that has white dog syndrome. Any large white dog causes her stress so we try to avoid this pup. If we see the mom, we move to another part of the room or we walk quickly past not making eye contact. Some larger dogs may not like small dogs, don't expect them to stay near each other in a room.
7) If your dog seems to be stressed, take a walk outside or around the hotel.
We know you don't want to miss any of the fun but if you see your dog getting stressed, take them for a walk outside or back to the room to rest. There is a lot of activity happening for the next 3 days, 30 minutes away will mean the world to your dog. Plus, your dog may need to get fresh air and a potty break.
8) Know when your dog has had enough.
Dogs get tired too. There will be a lot of activities during Blogpaws, there will be a lot of people and other pets. Humans can get sensory overload and so can dogs. Take time to allow your dog to rest. Even dogs in daycare need time to rest. I take ma back to the room to rest. She tries to be the energizer Bunny and I know she can come to a hard stop. I have to make her lay down but this also gives me time to take a rest.
I really hope these 8 tips help you have a great conference. These tips are also for when visiting family and friends or when you are at an event that has many other dogs there.
One more thing that I forgot to mention, there will be other pets besides dogs. Cats, ferrets, mini pigs and other animals will be enjoying the conference. If your dog has never been around these types of animals, please approach with caution. They are also around people they don't know.

Do you have any tips you would like to share?

    1. I hope it helps. I know some kitties were a little stressed from cat friendly dogs saying hi too quickly. I also know some dogs were stressed from being rushed up to from friendly dogs.

  3. ASK before approaching any animal

    1. Very true!! Some feel because we follow each other online that we should already know each other. This is not always the right way to do things.

  5. Great information. I love dogs, but respect that they don't know me. Another tip is not to assume that everyone loves dogs. There are some people who for some reason (maybe a past experience) are very fearful of dogs.

    1. I hope it helps others to understand that we all need a break sometimes. I know that I even need a break from activity and sometimes a walk is just what helps.

  10. This is a great list and I hope everyone who attends the conference gets a chance to read it. I'm bringing my career change guide dog, Stetson and plan on using the same short leather leash we used during his training days.

  12. Have a GREAT time at Blogpaws and I hope no one sniffs your butt too long. Re tip #7, I don’t think it’s wise to take your pet out during this conference since it will be over 100 degrees in Phoenix.
