Trying a Calming Coat To Ease Canine Anxiety

Since Carma Poodale's death, Scooby has had a hard time adjusting.
We have put him on an antidepressant to help him.
I will be talking to the vet about changing it because it doesn't seem to help.

They did everything together. Where you saw one, you saw the other. She was his support system. Scooby hadn't had the best life before he came to us. The stories I could tell you would break your heart. He wasn't cared for very well.
The problem that we are having is when we leave the house. He is having severe anxiety. When we come home even after a short trip to the store is he starts howling, high pitch barking and shaking. It takes a lot to calm him down.

He has fears of being left behind.

I try to go to pet-friendly stores but there are times when I have to go to the grocery store or a retail store. Scooby is not a service animal. He is not allowed in stores that are not pet-friendly. I try to go when the kid or hubby are home, it helps but not enough. There are times I have to go to grab something for supper when everyone is at work. I come home to a pup that is on the verge of a breakdown.

I took him to a home and garden store last week and saw they had a jacket called Calm Coat. It is similar to another coat that is sold. The only difference is the other coat cost around $50. and this one cost around $25. I bought it in hopes that it will help with his separation anxiety and fear loud noises such as fireworks and thunderstorms.

It has helped a little bit. We are trying it out more and more to get his accustom to it. Stay tuned to see how it works and the pros and cons..

How do you deal with your pet's anxiety?

  1. Canine grief of loss is real. It took time for Sam to recover when his BFF passed. I used lavender essential oil and valerian works well too as well as Bach's Remedies. Mostly I kept him busy to help him and showered him with tons of attention and extra love. Good luck with your sweet little boy.

    1. I have tried a few of the natural remedy's and he is getting a ton of attention. Yesterday I took him to the Vets with me since it was my volunteer day. He got to sit in the reception area and great clients from behind the gate. I reminded him that he was doing a great job working. It seemed to help him. He came home happy.

  2. Aww, that's so sad. Poor little fella. I don't have experience with this, so I can't offer advice. I hope the coat will help. Lots of love. :)

    1. I hope it does too. He didn't do well after Jenny Sue our spaniel passed away but he had Carma to comfort with. We will talk about the calming coat more after we try it a little longer.

    1. I will pick some up to see if it helps. Keeping him busy and keeping him exercised is helping a little too. I have dealt with this years ago with my dog Judy Bell. After my dog Hank passed away, she mourned her self to death. I was young and dumb and will always feel like a part of her dying was my fault.

  6. Good luck to Scooby. I've never had more than one pet at a time, so I'm sure there may be issues when something happens to one of the girls. My thoughts are with you.

  9. Bunny...I've had a lot of luck with Vetriscience Composure pro. It's a chewable with lots of natural calming products. It has been tremendous in helping Sampson with his noise/separation issues.
