So You Want to Get a Ferret? Things you Should Know

About a month ago we went to the pet store and were visiting with all the small animals. Jenny Sue caught the smell of the bunnies. She instantly stood up on the cage and started talking in a soft low sound. Jenny Sue was raised with a rabbit. When the pawents adopted her they had a very large lop ear rabbit named Prince. Prince was a house rabbit and him and Jenny Sue became bestest friends from day one. They slept together, they played together and they loved each other.
Prince would run around free in the house and one day the pawents went to work and ma didn't make sure his cage was latched shut. She swears that it was and that Jenny Sue unlatched it so they could play. But while the pawents were at work, Prince got behind the TV and chewed up all the wires. It looked like someone threw confetti back there! Dad almost had a heart attack when he seen the damage. Ma was thankful it didn't burn the house down. Prince lived till he was either 10 or 11 yrs old. Then we think he got bit by a spider out in the yard. I know ma and Jenny Sue really miss Prince and when our other rabbit passed away, the pawents decided to take a break from being rabbit owners. Ma always has wanted another rabbit but dad says no. The damage that Prince had caused to not only the TV, stereo, Christmas tree cords, or any electrical cord he could find is still fresh in their minds.

With wanting small animals like rabbits or ferrets, their are things to consider. Sure rabbits are cute but they really are not like cats like people think. Yes you can potty train them but don't think they will be 100 % accurate. Anyone that tells ma that their rabbit uses the potty box 100% of the time , just hasn't found the pellets laying around the house BOL!

But when considering a ferret or a rabbit you should do your research first to see if its the pet for you. If you rent a home you may want to check with your landlord first. My friends, Informed Ferret, has blogged about some of the things to know when renting. She is my guest blogger today. Jo knows about ferrets. She has some of her own and has been a ferret mama for years.

Enlightened Ferret: Know Your Landlord's Rules About Ferrets

A little about her and the blog-> I am AmyJo better known as Jo and I am a freelance writer and blogger. This blog is about ferret ownership and is created with the help of my ferrets both past and present

So if you want to get a pet for Christmas please be aware that if you are giving it as a gift to a child that YOU will be the one who takes care of it. I don't see anything wrong with pets for Christmas as long as it has been a decision that your family has made months ago. I was a Christmas gift! But my pawents had already decided to get another dog in July but they hadn't seen one that caught their attention until ME. It just happened to be around Christmas when they found me.

Please think before you adopt or get a pet. Think to yourself , if this was July would I still want to get this pet? Do I have time for it? Is the whole family involved? Nothing is more heartbreaking than to see a lot of pets find homes for Christmas, only to returned in Jan. Some of those returned pets never have a chance again.

Please after you read the blog from the Enlightened Ferret, just let her know that I sent you. She has many other post about ferrets and their care. If you are thinking about getting one for your home then this would be a great place to start learning more about them.

Tail wags to you !

Christmas for my Fur Friends

Today a gentleman met ma and me at our local pet food store to buy food for our Humane Society. He had sent at donation check and a note asking for someone to call him to schedule a meeting. Ma called him and they set the date for today to meet at the store. He was such a nice man. We walked through the store and found all the food we could that was on sale so we could make our $$ go farther. Ma had been collecting coupons also for this day and we had $15 worth of coupons to go along with the sale prices.
After we were ready to check out I seen that some of the raw hides were on sale and since I was feeling the Christmas spirit because of this gentleman, I asked ma if I could buy for my canine fur friends. She said yes but we had to stretch our money.

I went sniffing. What should I get for my friends? I sniffed and sniffed until I found something for all of them. I got them long lasting rawhides to help with their boredom at night while we were closed. Nothing is better than a good chew late at night. Sure I could have got a big box of Milkbone but those things are gone in a heart beat. I wanted something that would last.

Lets see do I have enough?

I got big chews for the big dogs, bags of small chews for the small to medium dogs. But there was something that caught my eye for my fur friend, Dozer. You know he is really special to me. He is actually pretty nice to me and always gives me a smile and tail wag followed by a "hellllooo"! He needed something extra special and when I seen it, I knew it was for him.

Wonder where I should put this?
I know I will put it on his blanket!
I put all the presents in everyone else's kennels so they would be surprised when they got in there. Some of them I hid their presents so they would eat their dinner first.

When Dozer went into his kennel , he looked like he was a little sad. I know kennels must be boring. He got a drink of water, ate his food and when he went to lay down on his bed, he spotted his present. Boy, did his tail wag! He sniffed it, stood back and looked at it, sniffed it again. He didn't know what to do with it because it was almost as long as his body!! He looked around with a big smile on his face and he seen me standing in the doorway. I barked "Merry Christmas,my Friend!" and he asked me if I got that for him. I said "yes, I did because you deserve it".

His tail wagged and wagged. He rolled on it, he through it up in the air, he finally chewed on it. Then he stopped, stepped back and pounced it. He threw it around, rolled on it some more then he chewed on it a little more. He looked so happy.

He looked at me and his eyes sparkled. He was happy with his gift. He gave ma a kiss but I did't let him give me one because I didn't want the other dogs spreading rumors about us. Ma and I headed home. I felt really good about what I picked out for my friends. I made them happy. Now I know that while I am laying here on my couch, my fur friends are busy chewing their raw hides. Some may be playing with them , some may be chewing on them but at least they aren't bored.

You know it doesn't take much to make a shelter dog happy. They may not have a foster, they may not have a home, but they have food in their tummy, and a roof over their heads and people who take care of them.

I would love if everyone that reads this post would pick up a some rawhides to take to a shelter near you. It helps with boredom of those long lonely nights, a good rawhide chew can make the nights better for those who have to sit in kennels all night.

Only thing I regret is that I didn't pick one up for myself.

If you pick up some chews for your shelter I would love to have a photo of it. You can post them on my FaceBook wall (Carma Poodale) or Twitter (@Carmapoodale) or email me! them and I will post them

Paw it forward!

#WW come home for Christmas

Please bare with me.
This is really hard on our family knowing my brudder is out there somewhere.

Happy Birthday Zen-Where ever you are

Today is my brudder Zen's 5th birthday. I was going to do a photo tribute to him too but we decided it would be best not to. Zen is still missing. On Oct. 5th 2012 , we were with ma at the Humane Society. We were helping out by transporting a kitty from the vet's office to the Humane Society to save the staff time. While ma put the kitty back where it belonged, Scooby, Zen and I all laid outside the door where she was. Ma told us all to go potty before we left and she watched us. We went 5 ft away from the door and we did our business. We all came back to the door and laid down. The staff was keeping a eye on us and so was she. She took a phone call and one of the staff members looked out and said we were all being good and just laying there.

We know not to leave that door. Ma hung up from her call and walked out and said come on lets go. Only problem was Zen wasn't there. He was gone. Ma thought he went to the car so we went to the car. He wasn't there. She started calling his name and told me and Scooby to "Find Zen". We ran all over the humane society and we couldn't find him. Ma and the staff started searching and calling him and he didn't come back. Ma called daddy and told him he needed to come NOW. Dad arrived in no time. All of us were frantically searching for him. Ma jumped in the car and drove through the neighborhood and no one had seen him. We searched well past dark and then we came home only to get up at the crack of dawn to go search some more. Flyers were handed out, hung on all stop signs, everyone that was out in their yards were talked too. Nothing. No sightings.

Since Oct. we have posted on social media, craigslist, more flyers have been put up, radio and TV stations have ran the lost dogs ad and so has our newspaper. Nothing. There have been some sightings in Oct but none of them were the right dog. We are still searching for him everyday. We are still getting the word out to local and social media, we won't stop till we find him.

But today is especially hard on all of us. Today is Zen's birthday and he won't get to celebrate it. If someone has him, they don't know its his birthday and he can't tell them. We miss him so bad. He has been part of our life for 4 yrs now and we weren't through loving him.

We wish you were here to hold you

We wish you were here to eat your birthday dinner

We wish you were here to go shopping

We wish you were here to relax with
This is a hard post to write. We want him back. He is part of our family. He is my little brudder. `
Where ever you are I hope you are safe and I want you know that we won't stop searching for you! We love you Zen

If you have seen him please call 270-313-2337 or 270-302-4176 There is a $500 reward for his safe return. He is a neutered male, toy chihuahua.

Happy Birthday Sissy Spaniel-Jenny Sue!

Today is my Sissy Spaniel's 10th Barkday. We love Barkday's in this house. We pawty like big dogs, we get to go out to eat and we get to do a fun day together. Before we start the fun filled day I thought I would share some photos of her growing up.

Jenny Sue was Adopted from the Owensboro Humane Society. She was the last one born. Her litter was the last ones adopted before they moved to current location.

She was so tiny. Weighed 1 pound. 6 oz. when adopted. She got her middle name Sue from dad's  mom's name. She was the one that asked for Jenny to have her middle name since none of the grandchildren were named after her.

She sure loves her grand parents. Here she is with Ma's mom. We always say Jenny Sue is the "Favorite Grandchild"

By age 2 she had all her spots. She had some coloring but the spots developed as she aged. Just like a dalmatian puppy.

By age 4 she started to shed excessively and beginning to have small seizures. At age 4 they had to put her on seizure medication. Vet said she had a tumor on her brain. Said if tumor continued to grow the pawents may want to think about making a decisions as to whether quality of life was greater than quantity. She started bumping into things and eyes started clouding up but never acted as she was in pain.

At age 5 Jenny Sue had to go to the vet's office to stay while blood work and other test were done. The vet called and said she had a seizure and went totally blind. She still didn't act as if she was ever in pain. This is when pawrents seen that she would use her paws as guides like a cane for blind people. This is why they keep her paws shaved so the hair doesn't interfere with the touch senses. She also plays continues to play fetch, swim, go walking without a leash and listens for sounds that pawrents make with their keys.

Jenny Sue loves to go bye bye , dress up in her clothes, have her photos taken and is and always be a "Daddy's Girl" She is still active in her life. After 2 yrs of taking seizure meds they weaned her off of them because all she did was sleep on them. She has went 3 yrs without a seizure and us and our vet are very happy that besides the blindness, she is healthy. He didn't think she would live over 2 yrs after the tumor was found. She proved him wrong. He now tells patients pawrents the story of how he was proved wrong with her. She has probably saved a lot of lives. Now pawrents see there is hope. Not all stories will be as Jenny Sue outcome.

Her spots are fading away and she is still a tiny girl. To me and the family she is as beautiful as the day they adopted her. To hear the stories they tell about her is so funny. Like the time she ate a bumble bee and the pawrents thought she had the mumps, or her obsession with drinking what ever someone is drinking whether it is RC or beer, you have to protect it because she will knock it over  to drink it.

Happy 10th Barkday to my sissy spaniel. I hope we get to share many many more Barkdays together. She is a sassy spaniel who likes to argue with you, has to have the last word. She growls a lot but its not a I am going to bite you growl its her way of talking. She says "mama, eat, yes, and mamaw plus mimics other words. She is full of spunk and love.

10 yrs old

Are we ready to go to the store to get my barkday present???
